The second Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge and Dinghy Distance Race will take place on September 25, 2010.
I got the following note from the co-chairman Jonathan Romero:
“Take a look at www.hrsunfishrace.com, and browse around.
This is the website for the Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy Distance Race, which is a long distance dinghy race, starting at Willoughby Bay, sailing down the Elizabeth River, ending at the ODU Sailing Center. This is the 2nd year that we will be running this great race and already we have over 25 entrants.
It all started last year when Jimmy Schools and myself, were sailing our Sunfish one thursday night and bragging about who’s boat was faster. Well, a bit of bravado later, we decided to meet back at
Willoughby in 6 weeks and race from there to Portsmouth City Park.
After sobering up, we realized that a 13 mile jaunt in a Sunfish might we a bit too much, so we shortened it to a 9 mile sprint to ODU.
After telling a few folks about our idea, they told others, and Bam!!
6 weeks later, we have 27 folks signed up to race, with 21 folks at the starting line with us. We had such a great time that we decided to do it again this year. We’ve gotten tremendous support from the sailing community, with Spinsheet, West Marine, signing on as a major sponsor, Yorgos Bagels providing breakfast, and Subway of Chesapeake/ Hickory providing lunch/dinner after the race.
We’ve even had inquiries from the WET folks, the windsurfing guys,
about coming out and racing with us also.
We are anticipating having 55-60 racers on the start line come Sept.
25th.
Hopefully this is something that you would be able to put on your website to help get the word out.
Thanks,
Jonathan Romero
